Finding jobs and developing one's career in Barcelona is a priority for many BcnIn members. Barbara Sobolak and Dominika Wycislo report back  on another of Porta22's English-language workshops on the subject.

After another great session with the teacher Antonella Di Giovine, we would like to share with you some useful do's and dont's about how to compose your CV and cover letter!

Before we get into details, it is good to think about why to pay attention to CV and cover letter writing at all. Isn't it enough that we have great abilities, experiences or have graduated from a respected university? Apparently not. The competition in the labor market is getting more and more fierce and the economic situation only raises the challenge. How to make your application stand out and catch employers' attention?

First of all, you need to prepare beforehand. The following steps are advised:

  1. Planning and organization
  2. Self-awareness process- think about what you feel good at and what your professional objectives are
  3. Study the job market
  4. Distribution and channels - how are you going to approach your potential employers
  5. Tools: CV and cover letter (the workshop's focus)
  6. Prepare for the interview
  7. Follow-up – be remembered and stay in touch

When we start writing our curriculum vitae, we need to decide what our objective is. Do we want to change our career path? Do we want to climb up the business path? All this will give you the answer to which CV model to choose. The workshop placed focus on:

Chronological CV – useful when you have a short career or have been working for a long time in the same company

Functional-based CV- use it when you change your position or career path. It emphasizes tasks and challenges from your previous jobs

Skill-based CV- good for people trying to change their career or applying for a job position in a different sector: your unchangeable skills will become your merit.

The cover letter should be detailed and kept formal but this is also the place where you can mention your interests and personal characteristics that make you perfect for the position.

During the workshop, the lecturer also pointed out some important differences between particular countries's CVs. If you are Spanish or Italian, it may be interesting for you to discover that including your picture or the date of birth into the application in the UK would not be desired due to discrimination issues.

I personally didn't spend too long on this myself, but it's obviously worth trying.

Spur of the moment editorials are often the best, the words just fly
    out onto the screen.

That's what I meant.... You'd have to be ignorant to think otherwise.

If you're doing it too then I'm not doing it! There's no point writing the same thing again.

It's not my aim to be a ballbreaker, but I think you can do better content than this. More content would be a start.

Until someone mentioned this to me I hadn't even considered it possible. Looks like I'm behind
    on the matter..

I may get around to doing a similar thing myself real soon, if I can find funding.

That's what I meant.... You'd have to be ill informed to
    think otherwise.
